The island of Ruegen is one of the most unique and inviting places to sail that the Baltic sea has to offer. Combining nature and culture, wild cliff coast and lovely bays and inlets, fields and forests, it shows several different faces within a day trip of sailing. Be it sandy beaches or offshore sailing to Sweden or Denmark, be it the historic hanseatic towns of Stralsund (UNESCO world heritage) or Greifswald. Or would you prefer to sail on the large lake-like inlets called "Bodden waters"? It is all within close reach of Stralsund. Whatever you decide to go for, could there be a better vessel to explore it than the Folkboat with its shallow draft?
And then there is the interesting history of the former GDR. Most parts of the Baltic coast were considered as border and hence sailing was strongly restricted. Large areas were closed military areas. Nature gained from this state of "sleep" and didn‘t have to suffer from extensive tourism and economical use. Luckily, big parts of the coast of Ruegen and around were proclaimed as national park soon after the political turn-around and the unification of the two states and their military.
So there are plenty of opportunity to explore of all eras of recent German history.
